What is Metal Clay?
Jewellery can be crafted in many ways, and one exciting method involves using a material called metal clay. But what exactly is metal clay, and how is it used to create jewellery? Let’s explore.
What is metal clay?
Silver metal clay is a specially formulated material made from recycled silver particles, combined with a plant-based binder and water. This unique blend allows the clay to be molded, shaped, and textured just like traditional clay. Once shaped, it’s dried—either naturally or with heat. The next step involves firing the piece, which can be done using a jeweller’s torch (even a creme brulee torch works!) or in a kiln. After firing, the result is a solid piece of metal of hallmark quality.
While silver metal clay is the most commonly used, other metals are also available. They follow a similar manufacturing process and work in the same way, Although I am accredited to teach base metals I only work and teach silver.
Aussie Metal Clay is the only clay made in Australia, and it’s the one I use for all my creations. Each piece is kiln-fired to ensure proper sintering. For beginners, I also teach torch firing since not everyone has access to a kiln.
